Microsoft has built a new chatbot to help people get over their exes, loneliness, boredom and what not. Meet Tay: Microsoft’s new “AI fam from the internet that’s got zero chill .” Tay wants to talk to you, and apparently it’s a good listener too. Microsoft says, the more you talk to her, the more she gets better at it.
More importantly, every time you leave her a text, rest assured Tay will text you back.
Developed by Microsoft’s Technology and Research and Bing teams, this artificial intelligent chatbot is available on Twitter, Kik and GroupMe. Tay has her own Twitter handle (@TayandYou ) and sends out automatic responses (based on machine learning) to every tweet and message that is sent to her.
“Tay is targeted at 18 to 24 year olds,” says Microsoft. That answers why its talks so much like a teen and why it has its location marked as “the internets” of all things.
In one of the instances, Tay says and we quote, “@dayala1912 Ooh.You’re a master selfie-taker my dude. Imagine who you’ll be when you’re 40.”
According to an Independent report , Tay could be an English-speaking version of Xiaoice, a very popular chatbot in China. Its popularity can be gauged from the fact that Xiaoice has already made her TV debut and is being used by thousands of people across China.
Designed with an aim “to engage and entertain people through casual and playful conversation” Tay’s official website also suggests some ice breakers should you be short on options. You can ask her to tell you a joke or a story, play a game or give you fun but honest comments on any picture you send. The fact that there are “plenty more hacks to discover” keeps things interesting.
