Apple’s new iPhone SE which was announced on Monday at an event at the company’s HQ will be launched in India on April 8. The phone will launch in the country for a price of Rs 39,000 for the base 16GB model. The information comes directly from Reddigton which is a distributor of Apple’s products.
The iPhone SE essentially trots a design that’s more or less the same as the 2-year old iPhone 5S. Apple has refined the design as such that the metal chamfers now have a matte finish and there’s a new rose gold colour which was first seen on the iPhone 6S.
In terms of hardware, the iPhone SE is quite similar to the iPhone 6S. It has the same A9 processor and it packs the same 12-megapixel iSight camera on the back which allows for features like 4K video and live photos. The phone also has a TrueTone flash on the back.
Even on the front, the phone has a 5-megapixel camera which is a big upgrade from the iPhone 5S selfie camera and the screen of the phone can light up like a flash. Apple calls this the Retina Flash.
Apple touts improved battery life from the iPhone 5S and states that the in usage it will be even better than the iPhone 6. The phone runs a new version of iOS dubbed 9.3 whose lead feature is display colour gamut shifter called ‘NightShift’.
The phone will be available in 16GB and 64GB models in four colours; Space Grey, Silver, Gold and Rose gold. Apple has also enhanced the LTE bands and theoretical performance of the phone is on par with the iPhone 6S.
Essentially the big difference between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 6S is in the display. The iPhone 6S has a 4.7-inch display which also has 3D touch technology, while the iPhone SE has a smaller 4-inch display without the 3D touch functionality. That being said, both the phones rock a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch.
Interestingly, this is the fastest Apple has launched an iPhone in India. The iPhone SE is coming to India within 16 days of its global announcement underlining the company’s commitment to India as a market. Already, Apple has filled to get a single retail license for its iconic stores in the country and in multiple calls its CEO Tim Cook has hinted that India is a crucial market for the company.
In addition to the iPhone SE, the company is also scheduled to launch the iPad Pro 9.7-inch in April, though dates for its launch haven’t been revealed. It will launch at a price of Rs 49,900.
